Blinds and Shades

How much light a room should keep is a different question from how much it lets in. A west-facing room with a television needs glare handled at one specific hour. A kitchen usually wants every bit of daylight it can hold. Solar shades are rated by openness, and that number decides how much of your view survives when they are down.

Privacy and light are not the same requirement, and treating them as one is the most common mistake here. A top-down bottom-up shade covers the lower half of the window and leaves the daylight coming in above it, which is usually exactly what a street-facing bedroom or bathroom wants. Sheers give you daytime privacy and then read completely differently after dark, once the lamps are on inside.

Motorization earns its keep on tall windows, wide spans, and anything stranded above a stair or behind furniture, the treatments nobody ever adjusts because reaching them is a nuisance. It also lets a whole room drop on a schedule, ahead of the afternoon sun instead of after the room has already cooked. It is far easier to decide before drywall than after.

Cordless, in any house with young children or pets. Cordless lift, motorization, and tensioned continuous-loop mounts all take the hazard of a pull cord off the table. Worth deciding on purpose rather than by omission.

Bathrooms and kitchens need something that shrugs off moisture and wipes clean. Bedrooms usually want room-darkening or blackout, often layered under drapery. Living rooms need something adjustable enough for a whole day of moving light. Woven woods warm up a room that reads flat. Shutters suit a window where the treatment should read as architecture rather than fabric.
